The American Antitrust Institute (AAI) will present Stephen Calkins, Professor of Law at Wayne State University, with the 2019 Alfred E. Kahn Award for Antitrust Achievement. The award program is an important part of AAI’s 20th Annual Policy Conference, to take place on Thursday, June 20 in Washington, D.C.
“We are delighted to present the achievement award this year to Professor Calkins,” said AAI President Diana Moss. “His deep knowledge and experience and significant contributions across legal scholarship and nonpartisan policy analysis make him a leader in the field of antitrust. Steve has balanced his career between fighting for competition and consumers and teaching the next generation of progressive antitrust advocates.”
Stephen Calkins is a long-time member of the AAI Advisory Board. He has been on the faculty at Wayne State University since 1983. He took a leave of absence from 2011 to 2015 to serve as a member of the Competition Authority of Ireland and director of its Mergers Division and later as a member of the melded Competition and Consumer Protection Commission of Ireland. He also served as an adjunct professor at University College Dublin Sutherland School of Law. From 2008 to 2011, Calkins served as Wayne State University’s associate vice president for academic personnel, while continuing to teach. From 1995 to 1997, Calkins served as general counsel of the Federal Trade Commission.
Professor Calkins will accept the 2019 Antitrust Achievement Award during AAI’s 20th Annual Policy Conference Luncheon in the National Press Club ballroom beginning at 12:15 p.m. He will be introduced by Federal Trade Commission Chairman Joseph J. Simons.
“Professor Calkins’ depth and breadth of knowledge and experience in the field of antitrust, across multiple continents and venues, make him ideally suited for the AAI Antitrust Achievement Award,” said AAI Board of Directors Chair Pamela Gilbert. “As he is a member of the AAI family, we are extremely pleased to celebrate and applaud his numerous successes and achievements.”
