The American Antitrust Institute (AAI) is pleased to announce that Roberta D. Liebenberg is the 2019 inductee to the Private Antitrust Enforcement Hall of Fame.
Ms. Liebenberg is a senior partner at Fine, Kaplan and Black in Philadelphia, focusing on antitrust class actions and complex commercial litigation. She has held leadership roles in many antitrust class actions and serves as Lead Counsel for the End-Payer Plaintiffs in In re Generic Pharmaceuticals Pricing Antitrust Litigation and Co-Lead Counsel in In re Railway Industry Employee No-Poach Antitrust Litigation. She was one of trial counsel for the class in In re Urethanes [Polyether Polyols] Antitrust Litigation, which resulted in a record-setting judgment against Dow Chemical Co. for $1.06 billion after a four-week jury trial and a subsequent record-setting settlement with Dow for $835 million. Law360 profiled Ms. Liebenberg as one of the “Titans of the Plaintiffs’ Bar” and The National Law Journal named her one of the “Elite Women of the Plaintiffs’ Bar.” She has also represented defendants in civil antitrust cases, including Southwest Airlines, and represents defendants in criminal antitrust cases as well.
She is on the Board of Directors of the American Antitrust Institute and twice chaired the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Antitrust Committee. She was Chair of the ABA Litigation Section’s Class Action Committee and Vice Chair of the ABA Antitrust Section’s Cartel and Criminal Practice Committee and also its Trial Practice Committee. She was named “Antitrust Lawyer of the Year” in Philadelphia by Best Lawyers in America three times, and the Chambers USA Guide has consistently listed her among its highest-ranked plaintiffs’ antitrust lawyers nationwide. She was Chair of the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal judiciary, which performs peer reviews of all federal judicial nominees.
Ms. Liebenberg is also well-known for her dedication to the advancement of women in the legal profession. She twice served as Chair of the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession and was Chair of the ABA Gender Equity Task Force; Chair of both the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Bar Associations’ respective committees on women in the profession; and Chair of DirectWomen, the only organization devoted to increasing the number of women attorneys on corporate boards.
She has received numerous awards and honors, including the ABA’s Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award, the highest award bestowed on women attorneys by the ABA. The National Law Journal named her one of the “50 Most Influential Women Lawyers in America.”
AAI established the Private Antitrust Enforcement Hall of Fame in 2018 as an important part of celebrating the organization’s 20th anniversary and furthering the goals of progressive competition research, education, and advocacy that have defined AAI’s mission and success since its founding in 1998.
The Hall of Fame recognizes practitioners for three major contributions:
- Distinguished service to the private antitrust enforcement community;
- Commitment to the enforcement of the antitrust laws; and
- Success in fighting for competition, consumers, and workers.
Ms. Liebenberg joins 2018 inductees Joseph Goldberg and H. Laddie Montague Jr.
