The American Antitrust Institute (AAI) is pleased to announce that it has hired Mark S. Hegedus as General Counsel. Hegedus brings a wealth of experience in antitrust law and consumer protection, with notable expertise in patent law, federal energy regulation, and complex federal litigation. Prior to joining AAI, Hegedus spent 17 years as a litigation attorney in the Office of the General Counsel at the Federal Trade Commission, where he represented the agency in high-stakes proceedings across the United States, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
A seasoned appellate advocate, Hegedus has drafted merits and amicus briefs for and presented oral arguments in nearly every federal circuit court of appeals. His work at the FTC also involved leading collaboration between offices within the FTC and components of the U.S. Department of Justice, including the Office of the Solicitor General, the Antitrust Division, and the Civil Division, to forge consensus on litigation positions. Among other accomplishments, he received the Brandeis Award, one of the FTC’s highest honors, for this work.
AAI President Randy Stutz welcomed the addition to the team, noting, “we will benefit enormously from Mark’s talent, wisdom and capability.”
Pamela Gilbert, Chair of the AAI Board of Directors, added, “Mark’s experience in litigation and appellate practice, combined with his dedication to antitrust enforcement, makes him a strong addition to AAI.”
Prior to his tenure in the FTC’s General Counsel office, Mark was a partner at Spiegel & McDiarmid LLP, where he spent over a decade representing municipal and cooperative entities in complex energy litigation, including before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, state public service commissions, and federal courts. His career also includes significant service as a Trial Attorney in the Antitrust Division’s Transportation, Energy and Agriculture Section.
