Davidson Commentary: Numerology and the Mismeasurement of Competition Laws

This Commentary by AAI Senior Fellow Kenneth Davidson discusses why it is difficult to measure the overall effectiveness of antitrust enforcement on the nation’s economy and why there are difficulties in using enforcement data to deduce whether new programs are likely to improve compliance with antitrust laws and improve competition in the economy.  Enforcement data is important and necessary to create and evaluate enforcement programs but it is useful only to the extent that it informs our understanding of those programs.  Accordingly, the Commentary advocates the development of more data and the continued search for greater understanding of what that data means.
